The concept includes the deployment of VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) drones around the country to conduct various public service missions, i.e. search & rescue, disaster response, power line inspection and medical deliveries. These missions have different demands to a drone platform and payload which requires a versatile drone, like the Spectre.
The autonomous mixed version Spectre drone employs a unique combination of combustion and electric engines which uses a combustion engine for the horizontal flight system. The drone is optimized for running on longer distances of up to 150km, can operate in temperatures as low as -20C, and carry a payload of 3kg within a cargo space of 50x30x30 cm, which is needed to conduct the various missions using, i.e. cameras, sensors, or delivering blood.
Additionally, a fully electric version of the Spectre drone is available which is best suited for shorter runs with minimal maintenance needs and human support at highest safety standards.
VTOLs take off and land vertically, which eliminates the need for a runway or launching and recovery equipment. This makes them suitable for confined spaces and challenging terrains in both, remote and urban environments. Their versatility enables the drone to conduct close observation or takeoff and then switch to efficient fixed-wing flight for longer-range missions which makes VTOL drones suitable for a wide range of public services as well as commercial use cases.
Payload requirements vary largely between missions and the conditions of the mission. A search & rescue mission, for example, can require the drone to carry high resolution cameras to provide an aerial perspective to operators, thermal cameras and searchlights for missions conducted during low light or adverse weather conditions, GPS or beacon receivers to locate missing persons, communication systems to establish contact, and emergency medical equipment for first aid care.
Drones are being deployed in diverse and sometimes harsh environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures, strong winds, rain, and dust.
